                Arthur kipps adalah seorang duda yang  mempunyai seorang putra bernama joseph dari seorang wanita yang sangat ia cintai namun meninggal saat melahirkan anak mereka, yaitu joseph. Arthur bekerja sebagai seorang pengacara dan akan menjalani tugas nya yang merupakan kesempatan terakhirnya yang harus ia kerjakan dengan baik. Ia bertugas menggurusi dokumen-dokumen mengenai rumah Ny. Alice drablow yang sudah meninggal beberapa tahun yang lalu dan ia juga bertugas untuk menjual rumah itu. Rumah itu bernama Eel Marsh yang berada di crythin Gifford. Karena Arthur tinggal di London ia terpaksa meninggalkan anaknya untuk menjalani tugasnya dan menitipkannya kepada sang pengasuh.

saat  tiba di Crythin Gifford ia menginap sebuah hotel. Keesokan harinya, atrhur ke rumah seorang pengacara yang bernama H. Jerome dan setelah itu ia ke rumah Eel Marsh dengan menumpangi di kendaraan Keckwich.

Rumah Eel marsh dikelilingi dengan lautan yang hanya bisa di lewati ketika air sedang surut dan akan pasang saat jam 5 sore. Rumah itu berada di tengah-tengah pulau yang tidak berpenghuni dan terdapat banyak kuburan.

Ketika ia mengintip dari jendela rumah itu, dari kejauhan ia melihat seorang wanita bergaun hitam yang menatap kearah rumah itu. Tetapi ia teralihkan ketika seekor burung gagak mengagetkannya, namun saat ia mengintip ke jendela itu lagi perempuan itu tidak ada. Saat berjalan ia mendengar suara meminta tolong namun ia tidak menemukan asal suara itu karena kabut tebal yang menyelemuti daerah itu, dan saat ia berbalik ia bertemu dengan keckwich. Di lain kamar, Samuel juga terperangkap di kamar yang ia masukki karena melihat anaknya yang telah meninggal yaitu Nicholas. Samuel bisa terbebas saat jannet pergi, dan mereka menaruh mayat Nathaniel di peti mayat jannet untuk menyatukan mereka lagi.

Namun, itu belum berakhir saat anak Arthur dan pengasuhnya ke crythin Gifford. Saat Arthur dan Samuel  berbincang-bincang, joseph melihat wanita bergaun hitam dan akhirnya ia ke rel kereta api saat kereta api sedang melaju. Namun, saat Arthur melindungi joseph.
